You might be able to relate to the above headlines… it was me for almost 30 of the 42 years of my life. I can remember trying the cabbage soup diet when I was 12 years old! I can remember my family calling me ‘CHUNKY BUM.’ I guess back then they didn’t realize J-Lo and Beyonce would make the ‘big booty’ in style!
From as far back as I can remember, I have struggled with low self-esteem, feelings of insecurity, dislike for my body, and just always that struggle to be smaller, or leaner, or better. That ‘CHUNKY BUM’ comment stuck with me in a negative way, and I continued to judge myself and my imperfections. Does this sound like something you too have struggled with?
I then got into the fitness industry over 26 years ago, and I have been personal training hundreds and hundreds of clients since then. Having a fit and awesome body was always the best advertising for anyone working in this industry. But what people don’t see is the internal damage being caused by the extremes needed to maintain the impossible look the media portrays for us.
About 20 years ago I began dabbling in and winning various fitness competitions.
I already was a brutal judge of my imperfections. Now, why not throw in a panel of 7 more people to randomly pick me apart and send me further into self-hate? This new “hobby” supported my obsession with diet and exercise, and I felt like I “fit in” with all of the other “broken” women. I continued to use my weight or my pant size as an indication of my self-worth or my value. I saw women abusing their bodies and rebounding so terribly from harsh prep methods, and I witnessed women bashing themselves constantly and never feeling like they were good enough.
In 2009 I achieved the ultimate goal of winning the Arnold Schwarzenegger Amateur Figure Competition.
However, instead of being on a high, I was at my all-time low. I was doing 2 plus hours a day of cardio, 1 hour a day of weight training, and 24 hours a day of stressing that I wasn’t good enough. I weighed 130 lbs on this large 5’ 8” frame and my skeleton face and frail body, although rewarded by judges, was ultimately extremely unhealthy.
For so long, I had witnessed the fitness industry spiral into the EXTREME mentality, by using over-training and compulsion with the “more is better” mindset to be fit or to get on a competition stage. It seems like a whirlwind looking back now and seeing all of the insane measures I took to try to be happy with my body. Nothing worked, and I would always gain any lost weight back and then some.
Outside of the competition world, I watched the media glorify starvation and crazy fads of overnight fixes with pills and cleanses. I needed to show that there was a BETTER WAY and I passionately worked to create it. I needed a better way to feel good about myself in my own skin, be flexible in terms of nutrition and not have restrictions, and to enjoy the workouts that I did, without having to live in the gym. I found the formula of success to juggle my life, work, family and also get in workouts in order to be healthier and in turn, I created the body shape I had been after all along.
You can probably relate to wanting to LEARN TO ACCEPT YOUR BODY and CHILL THE HECK OUT. EXERCISE FOR FUN, EAT TO FUEL YOUR BODY, CELEBRATE AND ENJOY A VARIETY OF FOODS. TO EMBRACE YOUR BODY like I finally had.
I have coached over 300 clients using methods that MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE AT – IN THEIR REAL LIVES. These plans have flexibility in eating and involve no fads, pills, or harsh rebounds.
Are you looking to find that self-acceptance and be happy with your body? To feel alive, fit, be active, and have the balance you need in your life?
I’m looking forward to being an ally on this leg of your fitness and wellness journey.
